Established in 1758, Leesburg is one of Virginia’s most attractive and vibrant communities. In 1812, Leesburg actually served as the temporary capital of the United States when the valuable papers of the Federal Archives (including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution) were brought to town for safekeeping. Leesburg was also the site of the Civil War Battle of Ball’s Bluff, a bloody Confederate victory fought on the banks of the Potomac River. Today, at Edwards Landing, an artillery embankment is recognized as the position from which Confederate gunners held off a federal procession that was attempting to move up Edwards Ferry Road to Balls Bluff to aid their struggling troops during the 1861 battle. The Confederate defense succeeded in holding off the procession and contributed to the definitive Southern victory.
